Cook Counseling

Dr. Jennifer Slusher, PhD works at the VTC Health Sciences and Technology campus in Roanoke.  She is a Licensed Professional Counselor (LPC) who earned her Master’s degree in Counseling and Human Development from Radford University in 1998 and her Doctorate in Counselor Education from Virginia Tech in 2007. She has over 20 years of experience working with adults coping with depression, adjustment/life transitions, women’s issues, anxiety, grief/loss, stress, and LGBTQ+ issues. She has been an adjunct instructor at Virginia Tech and Radford University in the Counselor Education program, and has worked in higher education and at various mental health agencies. Jennifer is very active in the Roanoke Area Counselor’s Association (ROACA), the Virginia Counselor’s Association (VCA), and the American Counselors Association.

Joseph Frieben is a psychiatrist at Cook Counseling Center. He earned his medical degree from the University of Rochester and his residency in psychiatry was completed at the University of Wisconsin and the University of Virginia.

Frieben is board certified in psychiatry by the American Board of Psychiatry and Neurology.

He joined the Cook Counseling Center staff in 2005 and enjoys treating the diverse array of problems and concerns seen in a university counseling center, with a particular interest in mood disorders.
